With more and more pictures of Mahi showing up on social media lately, we decided to give it a go too. We left the ramp just after 6:30 and headed to a bottom spot to check on some Red Snapper and Grouper populations. May 1st will be here soon.
After 30 minutes we determined they were strong and healthy and switched from bottom rigs to trolling gear in 180′ and headed East. We started picking fish off 1 at a time every thirty minutes or so blind trolling all the way to 400′. There were very few weeds, no fliers, or rips, just 78F deep blue water.
Dolphin were all nice size gaffers, no hero fish, but a weekend of eating fresh dolphin and a few bags in the freezer.
6 Dolphin in the box. Caught in 200′ to 400′
3 ARS and 4 Grouper caught and released, several more we didn’t get more than 30′ from the bottom.
